Glamour is synonymous with Hollywood movie stars, but they’re newcomers to the world of perfume, which goes way back. Perfume is thousands of years old.

The use of herbs and flowers to perfume the air was how a love for fragrance began. It was common for people to wear a garland of flowers, to hang fragrant plants indoors, and add aromatic plants to sweet-smelling rushes spread on a floor. One of the oldest uses of perfumes comes form the burning of incense and aromatic herbs used in religious services, often the aromatic gums, frankincense and myrrh, gathered from trees. And the word “perfume” comes from the Latin per fume, meaning “through smoke”.

The herbs having a pleasing scent are called sweet, and since they have been long used in cookery to add their characteristic flavors to soups, stews, dressings, sauces and salads, they are popularly called culinary.

Many of the flavoring herbs now in use were similarly employed before the erection of the pyramids. Sadly, many herbs popular in ancient times no longer appear in modern lists of esculents. Historical herb usage is based largely upon imperfect records. But it seems safe to conclude that a good number of herbs, especially those said to be natives of the Mediterranean region, overhung and perfumed the cradle of the human race.

For anybody who has ever wondered about the origins of Mothers’ Day in the UK

Mothers’ Day in the UK, traditionally known as ‘Mothering Sunday’, is believed to have originated from the 1600s and England was the first country in the world to dedicate a day for mothers.

It is known that about 400 years ago on this day people in villages would not visit their local church but would attend a large church, referred to as the ‘mother church’. Visiting the mother church was referred to as gone ‘a mothering’, which may explain the traditional terminology ‘Mothering Sunday’. The return to the ‘mother church’ became an occasion for family reunions with children who worked away from home. By the 19th century, Mothering Sunday had become a traditional day for children working as domestic servants or apprentices to be given the day off to visit their mother and family. The young boys and girls walking through meadows, on their way home to their family, would stop and pick the wild flowers for their mothers, hence flowers became the traditional Mothers’ Day gift.

If you stop for a moment and consider that the average American uses over 21,000 sheets of toilet paper each year, it is very hard to imagine what may have been used before toilet paper’s invention. That’s over 100 single rolls per person! The answers are mind bogling, really. Items like sticks, leaves, paper, rocks, grasses were all used. Now, even when camping in the most remote parts of the wilderness, most people pack some form or another of toilet paper. Some people use toilet paper for more purposes than simply cleaning oneself after using the toilet. Many people us it to wipe their nose, remove makeup, and to bandage shaving cuts. In fact, people use toilet paper for a lot of different reasons.

Toilet paper was first developed around 1880 by the British Perforated Paper company. It was sold in boxes of individual squares, not the rolls we are so accustomed to today. Scott Paper Company, an American company, began putting toilet paper in rolls around 1880. The first rolls were not perforated so the toilet paper dispenser had serrated edges with teeth that cut the paper to the size needed.

Valentine’s Day is that special day that makes lovers all across the globe feel the fragrance of love and passion more intensely. It is this time of the year that the spirit of romance is at its fullest swing and the flame of love tends to illuminate the world with lovely colors, spread the warmth in the air all around. Not much is exactly known about the history and origin of the Valentine’s Day, although there are different believes and various schools of thoughts . There were actually several interpretation regarding the history and origin of Valentine’s Day.

While according to some the Valentine’s Day celebration calls for the pagan tradition during the third century, the Europeans, on the other hand, believed that birds began to choose their mates on February 14th. It was by 1477 that the English associated lovers with the feast of Valentine with the belief that on this day “every bird chooses him a mate.” The practice started off with men and women writing love notes to their Valentines on February 14th. But one thing that is very interesting about the origin of valentine’s Day , is that many early Christian martyrs were named Valentine and it was not until 1969, that the eleventh Valentine’s Day celebration was first recognised by the Catholic Church in the formal way and the Valentines honored on February 14th were the Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. Although the Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and the Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae) had seperate entries in the ancient mythology, yet many scholars believed that they were the same persons.
